What is Theology?
WITHOUT A HIGHER power to encourage humankind to reach beyond its grasp, what is the purpose of existence? Theology allows humans to grasp for a greater purpose than self-gratification by asking the value of our deity. Without a grand design that guides the footpath, consumerism is the beginning and the end goal. Even the lesser evolved among humanity cannot accept this as the only purpose. Theology helps to understand a plan for humanity and what role each person plays. If there are expectations of humanity’s purpose, what does the deity expect of us?
Origin of Theology
Plato used the Greek term theologia to describe a discourse on god but the term theology can describe any discussion or study of organized religious doctrine. Doctrine includes the Bible, Koran, Torah, Buddhist tenets in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, Wiccan nature worship, or Unitarian Universalism and the study of reason and the golden rule.
Theology is the study of religion, faith in some principle greater than humanity, and the deity’s relationship to the world. As a discipline, theology helps students come to know their values and true beliefs in a higher power. It also shows the way to extend or carry out the deity’s place in the lives of others.
What is Theology?
Theologians study difficult questions such as where do I find this essence? Is there a soul and if so what is the soul’s purpose. Why strive without a goal that is bigger than one family, a block of neighbors, a city, a country, or a universe if there is no greater truth. What is the greater truth for humanity? How does belief in a divine deity advance humankind? The human psyche knows that there is a great and grand purpose even though humans have lost our way. Without this design, people can wander through life destroying themselves and others while searching for meaning and value.
Christians say, “Be Christ-like, and earn the respect of God for eternal salvation.” Both Islam and Christianity preach for men and women to worship and fear the deity and to reap the reward in death. Spiritualists, Unitarian Universalists, and Buddhists say, “Find God inside of you. Wiccans and Pagans say, “God is everywhere in nature and in all things.” Theologians ask, “Is there a god?” to which they reply yes. Theologians study the deity’s purpose and relay to others to help humanity create goodness for all humankind. What does deity expect of us? The theologians search, so that each person may search for the good in all and give their best. Other theologians compare opposite and complimentary beliefs searching for a common philosophical thread that blends the message no matter the belief.
If humanity understands the history, influences, and essence of spiritual beliefs, the value of spiritual strength and devotion for a philosophy of do unto others, life makes sense and has a purpose. The deity gives love freely to all of humankind to share, to learn lessons of life and values, and translate that learning to accomplishing a universe of love. Not relationship, parental or family love but a love that holds all humankind equal, supported and protected.
